Antique pearl and diamond ring made in Chester in 1884
This antique pearl and diamond ring was made in the Victorian era in Chester England in 1884. Set with a European cut diamond, the European cut diamond is the forerunner to the round brilliant cut diamond of today. Both having fifty eight facets, the as the European cut diamond was cut by hand and technology was quite different to today, the angles on the diamond are often steeper than modern round brilliant cut diamonds. In recent years the demand for both the antique European cut diamond and the earlier mine cut diamond (also known as a “cushion cut” or “old miners” diamond) has increased so dramatically that modern versions of these antique cut diamonds are being cut in the diamond polishing workshops of Antwerp and India.
