Antique sapphire and diamond engagement ring in 18 carat gold

The attention to detail in this ring is amazing from the top just as much as from the side and is a real testament to the quality of jewellery making that was achieved over a century ago when this ring was made.

Dating from the early 1900's, this ring was made in 18 carat yellow gold and is set with two beautiful natural sapphires that total 0.50 carats and display such a wonderful fine blue colour.

Set on each side are three European cut diamonds that total 0.36 carats and looking close, there are also eight rose cut diamonds that add an extra 0.04 carats in diamond weight as well as that extra sparkle to the ring.

The top of the ring measures 5.3mm wide by 18.3mm across, and looking at the ring from the side will show just why there is nothing quite like an antique. The fine attention to detail is spectacular and has the most beautiful scroll work.

From any angle, this is a magnificent ring that will no doubt always loved, cherished and adored.

Description

Antique sapphire and diamond engagement ring in 18 carat gold. Antique engagement ring.

This antique sapphire and diamond engagement ring was made in the early 1900's. It is set with both European cut diamond and rose cut diamonds.

This antique sapphire and diamond engagement ring was hand made in the early 1900's and is set with antique European cut diamonds and antique rose cut diamonds, all of which have the advantage of being conflict-free diamonds.

What are European cut diamonds?

During the mid 19th century, the old European cut came into focus, and was an attempt to change the old mine cut stones into a more perfect round cut. These stones can be considered as the first true round brilliant cut diamonds. The facets from the old miners were kept in their same position, but changed shape to a more round and evenly shaped stone.

The culets became smaller, as it was realised that light could leak out from this point in the stone. The development of the modern brilliant cut occurred in the early part of the 20thcentury with further modifications through the century. Diamond cutters apply the brilliant cut to other shapes, and this very exacting skill continues to enthrall craftsman and enthusiasts alike.

What are rose cut diamonds?

The design resembles a rose bud, comprising of a flat base with a number of triangular facets arranged in rows above each other, meeting at a sharp point in the centre.

First manufactured in India at the end of the 15th Century, this cut was perfected at the diamond cutting workshops in Antwerp and Amsterdam, and was very popular during most of the 16th and 17thcenturies.

Because the base of the diamond was flat, stones were often foiled back to improve the brilliance of the stone. This was achieved by applying foils or tints to the base of the stone.

For a number of years, diamond cutters experimented with variations of the rose cut, resulting in some truly amazing cuts, such as the Dutch rose, half-Dutch and the boat- shaped rose.
