Antique onyx drop earrings made in the Victorian era
Onyx is a natural material from the same family as agate, chalcedony and chrysoprase, and occurs naturally as dense black with a white “streak” running through the stone. Often this white band is either cut away and not used, or the onyx is dyed a complete black, however when the white is used in a carving, it highlights the beauty of the stone resulting in some wonderful designs such as in these antique drop earrings dating from the Victorian era of the 1880’s.
Made in 15 carat gold, each earring is set with three round pieces of naturally banded onyx, with the largest one at the bottom, a medium sized one at the top and a charming small on in the centre set amongst a lovely knot design.
Fitted on elegant shepherd hooks, the earrings measure 14.5mm across at the largest lower piece by 35.9mm to the top of the hooks.

Antique Whitby jet and painted porcelain drop earrings
Whitby jet is actually the fossilized remains of a tree and has been used in jewellery as early as 10,000 BC and even though it was also popular in Roman times, it was the Victorian era of the 1800's when it was most popular, and here are a pair of antique Whitby jet and painted porcelain drop earrings.

A demi parure is the term given to a matching suite of jewellery such as can be seen here in this Victorian era demi parure brooch and earring set.
Dating from the 1880’s, this set was made in 15ct gold and each earring is set with a rose cut diamond and measures 18mm in diameter to 26mm to the top of the shepherd hooks. Victorian pique drop earrings
For all of you pique jewellery lovers out there, here is a wonderful pair of Victorian era pique drop earrings in the form of a Maltese cross.
Pique is the use of gold and silver inlayed into tortoiseshell and was very popular in the Georgian and Victorian times.
These antique pique earrings are made in the shape of two Maltese crosses and measure 3.7cm from the very bottom to the top of the shepherd hooks by 2.1cm wide at the lower cross.
There are reproduction antique jewellery around today, however due to tortoiseshell now being banned, there will never be reproduction pique jewellery making it so sought after, unique and special.
