Synthetic colour change sapphire and diamond Retro era ring
The correct gemmological name for this stone is synthetic corundum alexandrite type, however over the years, this mistakenly gets called just alexandrite.
Alexandrite is the famous and rare gemstone that was originally found in the Ural mountains and changes colour from red to green which are ironically the same colours and the Russian Imperial family to which the gemstone is named after.
However in the early 1900's when synthetic gemstones were starting to be made, experiments were made where vanadium was added to aluminum oxide which belongs to the gem family corundum which is ruby and sapphire.
As the vanadium caused this "new" stone to change colours from blue to purple under different light, it has also mistakenly been called "synthetic alexandrite", and over the years just alexandrite.
This material was popular from the early 1900's to the 1960's and including the fabulous 1940's when this ring was made.
Set in a very stylish 18 carat rose gold setting, the colour of this stone changes from blue to purple and certainly catches the eye. Highlighted with four rose cut diamonds on each side. The ring measures 12mm wide at the centre by 20mm across and has such a smooth flowing design that looks amazing from not only the top, but the sides as well.
To add to the charm, history and character of the ring, inside the ring has been engraved with "JH 1919-1944" which adds to the allure and charm of the ring.
Perfect for day or night where it will not only be admired, but change colour, this ring is a exciting as it is beautiful.
