Antique bloodstone seal with a secret photo locket compartment
Antique jewellery is so often so unique with such wonderful features and characteristics that are no longer seen in modern jewellery, and this is exemplified here in this amazing antique seal that hides a secret photo locket compartment in the base. Going back as far as Roman times, after a letter was sealed with wax, the writer would stamp the still warm wax with his or her seal to prevent the wrong person from opening the letter, as once broken, the wax seal could not be used again. Remaining popular all through the Georgian and Victorian periods right up to the Edwardian era when this one was made, the look of seals are always so unique to one another and look wonderful on a necklace. Made in 9 carat rose gold in 1906, the beautiful scroll work on the seal alone is so wonderful to admire as is the bloodstone set into the base of the seal. The base measures 21.6mm by 18.1mm and stands 24.7mm high and the colour of the rose gold has that wonderful warm tone to it that has achieved such a wonderful patina to it. It is astonishing to think that this locket was made well over 130 years ago and still looks incredible and with the addition of the rare green gold to highlight aspects of the locket, it will be such an amazing talking piece. Gold can alloyed with other metals to produce different colours, such as copper to produce rose gold, resulting in a lovely warm tone to it, and today, although not very common, green gold is made by adding pure silver to the gold, however the green colour is more a soft green-yellow colour. However in the late 1800’s, cadmium was added resulting in a stronger colour, and while never a strong green such as yellow or white gold, the tone of green in antique pieces is more pronounced and is used perfectly here to highlight the leaves in the design in this locket. With the rose gold used in the flower and the border, the rest of the locket has also been hand engraved. The amount of time and thought that went into making this locket would have no doubt been immense, and from near or far, this is such an exquisite locket.
