18 carat antique Rotherhams watch retailed by Levinson & Sons
In the early 1900’s the need for a wrist watch became more and more apparent, and here is a wonderful early wrist watch that was not only made by the English company Rotherhams, but has the added charm of being retailed by one of Australia’s oldest and most respected jewellers, Levinson & Son.
Made in London in 1911 in a solid 18 carat yellow gold case, Rotherhams used their long established knowledge of pocket watches to make this wrist watch that will no doubt always be such a wonderful talking point.
Whereas there are some pocket watches that have been converted to wrist watches and are easy to spot by having newer lugs for the band fitted to the case as well as most importantly, the crown for winding it at the 12 o’clock position, this watch was always made as a wrist watch.
The movement which has been serviced and comes with our twelve month warranty is a beautiful English 3/4 plate movement with a pin set for changing the time. What this means, is that winding the watch is done via the crown, and then to set the time, the small pin just below the crown at the 4 o’clock position is pressed in while turning the crown to set the hands.
The 18 carat gold case measures 35.8mm across plus the large onion crown, and like the movement is also based on a full hunter pocket watch with a lid on the front, this smooth case is so tactile to touch and will amaze so many when it is opened to reveal the beautiful white enamel dial.
On the dial it is signed “Levinson & Sons. Perth W.A Made in England”, giving it a wonderful bit of Australian history to the watch. Established in 1854 by the Lithuanian jeweller, Samuel Levinson under the name “S.Levinson, Jeweller”, the company became the official jeweller for the Western Australian Government, and in 1884 Samuel’s son David joined the business as a jeweller and was renamed “Levinson & Sons” in 1900. Having this bit of early Australian history, really makes this such a special timepiece that will no doubt always be a wonderful conversation starter.
And on the inside dust cover, it has been hand engraved with the word “Betty” that although we don’t know who she is, adds an extra allure to the charm and character of the watch.
This is such an elegant watch that is steeped in history from the Rotherham’s company as well as Leviinson & Sons, and will no doubt always be loved and treasured each time that it is worn.
