A brief history on the Rolex automatic calibre 3035
Rolex released their calibre 3035 in 1977 as the movement to take over from their esteemed calibre 1570. This meant that it not just had to be better, it had to make people realise that this was such a leap forward in watch movements which it was of course.
To begin with, it was Rolex’s first gents watch to have a high beat movement. By increasing the balance speed from 19,800bph to 28,800bph, this new movement now offered an even greater level of accuracy than the earlier model, which itself was so highly regarded.
This new speed of the 3035 causes the seconds hand to now “tick” eight times per second, giving Rolex their iconic smooth sweep that is so characteristic of Rolex watches today.
The Rolex 16013 models used the 27 jewelled Rolex calibre 3035 which had an upgraded power reserve of 50 hours and along with this increase in its power reserve and frequency, the Rolex calibre 3035 was also was the first automatic movement to feature a quickset function.
