1870’s antique diamond ring

This antique diamond ring was made in the mid-Victorian period of the 1870’s and was not just designed as a lovely and traditional cluster ring, but is also set with the much loved and desired mine cut diamonds as well as having a gorgeous hand engraved band.

Made in 18 carat gold, the ring is set with one mine cut diamond in the centre that measures 0.36 carats and is surrounded by a further eight that total 0.40 carats. The mine cut diamond is also affectionately known as a “cushion cut” diamond thanks to their somewhat squarish shape, and in recent years genuine antique mine cut diamonds have become so highly sought after. The sparkle and charm of these diamonds will make any woman so proud to wear this ring.

Measuring 9.5mm in diameter, the ring is complimented by the very sweet and charming engraved shoulders which adds that extra level of elegance to the ring.

This ring will easily suit any finger as well as making a wonderful engagement ring.

What are mine cut diamonds?

At the start of the 18th century, a great leap forward emerged with the “invention” of the new 58-facetted diamond. At the time, these were the closest resemblance to today’s brilliant cut diamond. Firstly, these are referred to as old mine cut diamonds, or “old miners” as well as “cushion cut diamonds”. Secondly these were cut often squarish or cushion shaped, with quite a steep angle on the crown and pavilion. This was to maximise weight retention in the diamond. As well as these features, the “old miners” often had quite a large culet or collet, the horizontal base formed by the blunting of a point when the stone is cut as a brilliant.
