In 1933, Rolex released the first automatic watch that due to its relatively thick movement, resulted in it protruding out the back of the watch resulting in a case back that was not flat like today, rather it has a slightly bulbous shape, hence it earned the nickname "Bubbleback".
Fast forward to the 1940's, and the technology was developed to make the rotor more slim, resulting in what is affectionately known as the Rolex semi-bubble back as can be seen here in this wonderful and exciting example.
Made in 1949 in 18 carat yellow gold, the dial, hands, indexes as well as the shape of the case, all come together seamlessly to create a watch that looks fabulous on the wrist and will always be admired no matter where or when it is worn.
The dial is all original and has achieved such a wonderful patina that not only adds to its charm and character, but is also so sought after by collectors. On top of this, the hands and indexes are also in 18 carat gold and to make this dial even more exciting, the Rolex five pointed coronet at the top, has a flat base instead of the more common oval section below.
Measuring 34mm across, it is fitted with the Rolex "Super Oyster" crown, that was another innovative leap forward by making this water resistant without the need for their screw down crown. Although this watch has just been completely serviced by our in-house watchmaker who used to work for Rolex, we don't recommend to take vintage watches such as this in the water.
Fitted with the automatic Rolex calibre 645 that runs beautifully and comes with our 2 year warranty, this is such an elegant and stylish vintage Rolex that will always look so stylish on the wrist.

18ct gold Rolex semi-bubble back 6084 made in 1949
The Rolex Bubble Back has become an iconic and important watch in the world of horology.
First released to the world in 1933, the first Rolex Bubble Back had the reference 1858. This was fitted with the Rolex calibre 520, and was the first self-winding watch in the world. This was fitted in a totally waterproof case, thanks to Rolex's earlier Rolex Oyster design case.
The term "Bubble Back" was actually not given by Rolex. It was the moniker that it was given due to the "new" automatic rotor making the movement thicker than previous models. Because of this, Rolex now had to adjust the thickness of the watch to make room for the automatic rotor system. This now made the back of the watch case more bulbous, giving rise to the nickname "Bubble Back".
With the early and rare Super Oyster crown fitted, this was a technological leap forward by Rolex to make a waterproof watch without the screw down crown.
Kalmar Antiques now employ a Rolex trained watchmaker on site!
When we expanded and renovated our store in late 2022, we put in not only a full watchmaking and polishing workshop, but a watchmaker who used to work for Rolex for nearly seven years. This allows us to be able to service your Rolex to Rolex standards, as well as other watch brands such as Omega, Cartier and Patek Philippe to name a few.
We recommend to service your Rolex every five years. If you wear the watch in water, we strongly suggest having your Rolex watch, or any watch for that matter, pressure tested once a year.
