18ct pocket watch by John Cross in 1848

Sometimes you hold an antique pocket watch in your hand and are just amazed by its age and condition that takes your breath away and here is a fantastic 18ct pocket watch by John Cross that was made in 1848.

There are so many unique aspects of this pocket watch that makes it so special and unlike any that we have had before.

Pocket watches come in two main forms - without a front cover (open face pocket watch) or with a front cover (full hunter pocket watch). When they don't have a front cover, they usually have the bow of the pocket watch at the 12 o'clock position and when it is a full hunter pocket watch, the bow is at the 3 o'clock position, however this is an open face pocket watch with the bow at the 3 o'clock position.

Furthermore, when you push on the top of the bow, it springs open the front of the pocket watch exactly as a full hunter pocket watch would do.

Not only is the dial all original, it is in spectacular condition which is incredible considering that it is over 160 years old. With traditional black Roman numerals and the sub-seconds, the time is displayed with those elegant Breguet style minute and hour hands.

Turning the pocket watch over reveals the most intricate and high quality hand engraving that would have painstakingly taken hours to engrave by hand and opening the back and the dust cover reveals a gorgeous and immaculate movement signed  "John B Cross 70 Cornbill London". Completely serviced and complete with our twelve month warranty, this has what is called a diamond end stone on the balance which can be seen in the close up image of the movement.

John Cross made some very high grade pocket watches as well as clocks, and this pocket watch by him is certainly no exception and a fantastic testament to the quality of craftsmanship all those years ago.
