Originally used when one wanting to "seal" an envelope to prevent anyone else opening or tampering with it, the use of a seal goes as far back as Roman times, and here is a lovely antique 9ct rose gold bloodstone seal made in 1901.
Seals now look wonderful when worn on a necklace or an Albert/fob chain around the neck or attached to a bracelet, and of course also make a perfect desk accessory with the bloodstone base still able to be engraved with a family crest, intaglio or initials.
More often than not, these antique seals were gold lined/filled, so it is nice to get one that is solid gold, and this one bears not only the gold carat stamp, but also the date and county hallmarks for being made in Chester in 1901.
Measuring 28.8mm high, the base measures 21.2mm by 18.6mm and is set with bloodstone which has a green colour with red flecks and left as is or engraved always looks great.
This antique seal is in wonderful condition and no matter where or how it is worn or used, this will always be admired.

The technique of sealing a letter, goes back as far as Roman times and after a letter was sealed with wax, the writer would stamp the still warm wax with his or her seal to prevent the wrong person from opening the letter, as once broken, the wax seal could not be used again and this was a technique used all the way through to the Victorian era.
