Antique diamond engagement ring set with mine cut diamonds

There is something so unique and special about antique rings, from them being hand made and therefore so individual, to being set with genuine antique cut diamonds, and made in a design that has never gone out of fashion or style and all of these features are evident in this gorgeous antique diamond cluster ring dating from the 1880's.

Hand made in 18 carat yellow gold, this ring is set with the gorgeous mine cut diamonds. The forerunner to the European cut diamond, the mine cut diamonds are also called "cushion cut" diamonds thanks to their somewhat squarish cushion shape.

In the centre is a mine cut diamond that measures 0.35 carats and is surrounded by eight more mine cut diamonds that come together to total 0.80 carats. The sparkle from these diamonds is wonderful, as is the fact that they were cut by hand 140 years ago. When a ring is hand made, it has all the charm and character of being a one off making this even more special to wear.

Measuring 10.6mm in diameter, the ring has the most elegant band with a beautiful ribbed finish to it that feels so sleek on the finger, and there is no doubt that this ring will always be loved and admired.

Description

Antique diamond engagement ring set with mine cut diamonds

The cluster ring is now sometimes also called a halo ring. This design is also very popular for engagement rings, and there is nothing like a genuine antique diamond engagement ring that has been hand made over 100 years ago sitting on your finger.

This antique diamond engagement ring was hand made in 18 carat yellow gold and is set with antique mine cut diamonds. The mine cut diamond was first cut at the start of the 18th century, and was a great leap forward with the “invention” of this new fifty eight facetted diamond. At the time, these were the closest resemblance to today’s brilliant cut, and are referred to as old mine cuts, or old miners. These were cut often squarish or cushion shaped, with quite a steep angle on the crown and pavilion, to maximise weight retention. While weight was kept to a maximum, they often lacked a lot of internal fire and “brilliance”. As well as these features, the “old miners” often had quite a large culet or “collet”, the horizontal base formed by the blunting of a point when the stone is cut as a brilliant. Today modern versions of the antique mine cut diamond as well as the European cut diamond and rose cut diamond are all being cut in the diamond cutting houses in Europe and India, showing just how popular these antique diamond cuts are.

The designs of many antique engagement rings that were created over 100 years ago have remained so popular up to today and although the styles may be copied by casting it in a CAD design, there will always be something much more unique and special about an engagement ring that has been hand made compared to one that has been mass produced by a computer.
