Antique garnet topped doublet earrings
Garnet topped doublets, or GTD’s as they are colloquially known as, where first made in the mid-1800’s, and is a technique where a thin sliver of garnet is fused to the top of a paste (coloured glass) stone. This was used to protect the paste from abrasion and is sometimes seen in jewellery from the Victorian era, such as these magnificent earrings.
Dating from the 1880’s, these earrings were made in 15 carat gold and measure a very elegant 5.1cm in length, are set with four garnet topped doublets with a pearl in the centre.
Set into the most beautiful surround, they are finished with those gorgeous articulated tassels at the bottom that sway magically and will captivate the eye.
Fitted with lovely long and secure shepherd hooks, these are a divine pair of antique Victorian earrings.
