Description
Antique natural pearl necklace made in the Victorian era
This antique pearl necklace was made in the 1870’s. Typical of early Australian jewellery, it is set with natural pearls as opposed to later cultured pearls.
Natural pearls are those that have been created with out having the oyster seeded by man and is the by-product of an irritant such as a grain of sand, entering the oyster. Over the months and years, the oyster will build up a layer of nacre over this irritant, resulting in a beautiful natural pearl being produced. It is estimated that between 1 in 5,000 to 1 in 10,000 oysters will produce a natural pearl.
