Antique onyx drop earrings made in the Victorian era

Onyx is a natural material from the same family as agate, chalcedony and chrysoprase, and occurs naturally as dense black with a white "streak" running through the stone. Often this white band is either cut away and not used, or the onyx is dyed a complete black, however when the white is used in a carving, it highlights the beauty of the stone resulting in some wonderful designs such as in these antique drop earrings dating from the Victorian era of the 1880's.

Made in 15 carat gold, each earring is set with three round pieces of naturally banded onyx, with the largest one at the bottom, a medium sized one at the top and a charming small on in the centre set amongst a lovely knot design.

Fitted on elegant shepherd hooks, the earrings measure 14.5mm across at the largest lower piece by 35.9mm to the top of the hooks.
