Antique opal and rose cut diamond ring

$3,350.00

The colour in these opals are so beautiful and displays such wonderful spectral colours that is highlighted by charming rose cut diamonds and an exquisite setting.

Hand made in 18 carat yellow gold in the early 1900’s, the solid Australian opals are all matches so well together and with the larger opal in the centre and the smaller side opals, the proportions that the ring graduates is simply perfect.

Highlighted with four rose cut diamonds to add a charming sparkle to compliment the opals, antique rose cut diamonds have a charm and character all of their own.

Then there is the setting from the side which is so beautiful and a testament to the quality of handmaking a ring from start to finish, as well as what could be achieved over 120 years ago.

Measuring 8.2mm wide at the centre by 16.1mm across, this is a wonderful example of not only Australian opals, but a lovely antique ring.

What are rose cut diamonds?

Like the name implies, the rose cut diamond resembles a rose bud, comprising of a flat base with a number of triangular facets arranged in rows above each other, meeting at a sharp point in the centre.

First manufactured in India at the end of the 15th Century, this cut was perfected at the diamond cutting workshops in Antwerp and Amsterdam, and was very popular during most of the 16th and 17thcenturies.

Because the base of the diamond was flat, stones were often foiled back to improve the brilliance of the stone. This was achieved by applying foils or tints to the base of the stone.

For a number of years, diamond cutters experimented with variations of the rose cut. This resulted in some truly amazing cuts, such as the Dutch rose, half-Dutch and the boat- shaped rose.
