Antique Pietra Dura brooch/pendant with a locket on the reverse side.
Here is a wonderful and very versatile antique brooch that can not only be worn as a pendant, but also has a locket compartment on the reverse side.
Pietra dura originated during Roman times and is the term given for the inlay technique of using cut and fitted, highly-polished coloured stones to create images in solid walls and floors, furniture as well as jewellery, resulting in some truly spectacular pieces.
This piece here dates from the 1870’s and was made in 15 carat gold and uses such incredible colours that is complimented perfectly by the equally gorgeous mount. The mount measures 51.5mm by 40.8 and with the choice to be worn as a brooch or a pendant, plus having the ability to have a photo placed in the reverse to make it even more personal, this is an exception piece of antique jewellery that will always look perfect no matter how you choose to wear it.
