Antique signet rings are steeped in history going back as far as 4,000 years ago, and here is a stunning antique signet ring that was made in 1871 and set with a piece of carnelian on the top.
Carnelian comes from the quartz family and was often used in signet rings and seals as it was hard and durable enough to last as well as being able to be engraved.
The shield shape top measures 12mm across by 13mm and has such a wonderful deep rich colour to it that is complimented by the warm 15 carat rose gold setting. 15 carat gold was only used from 1854 until 1931 and often has a wonderful warm tone to it such as in this ring.
Not only is the top of the ring so attractive, but the sides have been exquisitely hand engraved. Whereas so much engraving today is either machine engraved or simply stamped out, to hand engrave to this quality truly shows the incredible craftsmanship of the jeweller which is made even more amazing considering that this was done nearly 150 years ago.
Still in wonderful condition, this antique signet ring is so tactile to the touch and will always be loved.
