Antique triple spinner pomander
$2,850.00
The name pomander comes from the French term “pomme d’ambre” that translates to “apple of perfume”. Going as far back as the 13th Century, these were used for protection against infection, disease and even worn to ward off evil spirits. Finding a larger resurgence during the Georgian and Victorian eras, these were often used to hold a wad of cotton soaked in perfume, and here is not only a very beautiful pomander, but a very unique one as well.
Made in the Victorian era of the 1880’s in 9 carat gold, this was made in the form of a spinner. However making this even more special, it was made as a triple spinner as opposed to a double spinner, in that it has three distinct sides with chalcedony, carnelian and onyx. The carnelian section has a very sweet hinge, that when opened will allow the wearer to place some perfume scented cotton inside, with the delicate pierce working around it to allow the scent to escape. The fine detail is just so incredible, as is the face of a man on both sides.
Measuring 20.4mm across by 28.8mm, this is not just a lovely antique spinner, not just a lovely pendant, but a lovely piece of history to own and wear.
