Antique untreated Ceylonese sapphire and diamond earrings

The sapphires in these earrings are not only magnificent in both size and colour, but are also unheat treated Ceylonese sapphires making them even more special and amazing to admire.

For centuries it was known that if a sapphire or ruby was placed into a fire it will improve its colour and clarity, and although the technology in doing this has now changed, people have been heat treating sapphires and rubies ever since for this reason. This treatment is worldwide accepted as a normal treatment and not deceiving in any way and is accepted as a standard treatment for sapphires and rubies as it remains stable and does not damage the stone.

However it is much more exciting when the sapphires or rubies have not undergone any treatment and still display such a fantastic colour and transparency such as those that are set into these earrings. For centuries Ceylonese sapphires have been regarded as the best in the world, and these truly exemplify this.

Hand made in 18 carat yellow gold and platinum, the two sapphires total an impressive 3.75 carats and display such a magnificent royal blue colour. The colour of these sapphires is absolutely captivating and they have such an intense depth of colour that put these up there with some of the finest Ceylonese sapphires around.

Each earring is surrounded by ten European cut diamonds with the twenty diamonds coming together to total an impressive 2.80 carats. The diamonds highlight the sapphire perfectly and the sparkle emanating from them in just incredible and showcase that wonderful charm of antique diamonds that were cut by hand all those years ago.

Measuring 12.3mm across by 13.6mm, the earring are fitted with secure lever back fittings that allow each earring to sit perfectly on the ear.

As magnificent and exciting today as when they were made over a century ago, these are truly an exceptional pair of earrings that will always be admired and appreciated for their fine quality and design.

A brief history on heat treating sapphires and rubies:

Sapphires and rubies have been heat treated for centuries to improve their colour and clarity and this is a worldwide accepted practice. It should be clarified that a sapphire or ruby that has undergone some form of heat treatment is still a natural gemstone from the ground and is not a synthetic/man made stone and the treatment is completely stable. Lately on the market there is a technique of glass filling or lead filling stones which will improve the colour of a natural gemstone, however this treatment is very unstable and the stone may look worse in a few years.
