Antique white enamel mourning ring of an unwed woman

Mourning jewellery was actually a beautiful way to remember the passing of a loved one, and here is a very beautiful antique white mourning ring of an unwed woman.

More commonly found in black enamel, the white enamel means that this young lady was unmarried when she died at the age of 23 in 1777.

In the centre, this mourning ring has an urn being a typical motif for mourning rings and the enamel border spells out ” Eliz Bryant OB 14 Apr 1777 AE 23“. This allows us to hold in our hand and wear on our finger a ring that is so much more personal now that we know who this ring was made for.

The oval top measures 15.1mm by 13.5mm across and the ring is made in 18ct gold and the smooth top and band really feel so lovely on the finger.

While some may consider a mourning ring as morbid, they were in fact a celebration of ones life and although this woman did pass away at a young age which is always a terrible shame, at least her memory can live on in this beautiful Georgian mourning ring.
