Arts and Crafts era peridot and natural pearl necklace

Here is a very beautiful 18ct gold Arts and Crafts era peridot and natural pearl necklace that has such a beautiful natural look and style to it.

The Arts and crafts movement was from the 1880's to the 1920's and even though it coincided with the Art Nouveau period, has a style and look to it all of its own. Whereas Art Nouveau jewellery was often influenced by nature, Arts and Crafts jewellery has a wonderful naturalistic design and style to it.

This can all be seen here in this necklace that is set with peridot and natural pearls. The use of natural pearls is just wonderful as it highlights the use of materials as they are found in nature. With three natural pearls suspended at the bottom and one in the centre, their "cages" that support them are just so delightful to admire.

With a further six natural pearls set into the chains, there is also the addition of two peridots to add a subtle additional colour to this wonderful necklace.

From one peridot across to the other side, this distance measures 10cm and from the centre pearl to the lowest drop, this distance measures 4.2cm. Laid out from end to end the 18ct gold chain itself measures 42cm allowing for this necklace to sit perfectly on the neckline.

This is such an attractive example of Arts and crafts jewellery, and one that will always be loved, cherished and admired.

Description

Arts and Crafts era peridot and natural pearl necklace

A brief history on the Arts and Crafts era:

The Arts and Crafts period was from the 1880'sto the 1920's and originated in England. Quickly spreading throughout Europe, it covered all aspects of art and not just jewellery. Often seen in textiles, furniture and architecture, even though it coincided at the same time as the late Victorian and Edwardian times, which also had the Art Nouveau period influencing the same aspects, it still has its own style. More closely resembling Art Nouveau pieces, whether this be furniture, architecture or jewellery, Arts and Crafts jewellery often has a somewhat more crude design and style to it. Whereas Art Nouveau jewellery was heavily influenced from nature, Arts and Crafts jewellery often shares a similar asymmetrical approach, with a more crude somewhat amateurish look to it. With names such as William Morris often associated the with Arts and Craft movement, this is one area of jewellery that is increasing in popularity more and more.
