Exceptional quality antique moonstone collar dating from the 1870's

Made in the Victorian era, here is an exceptional quality antique moonstone collar dating from the 1870's, that not only has incredibly large pieces of moonstone, but all are of the finest quality and unlike so much of what is on the market today.

Moonstone is a very unique gemstone and is often a milky white colour with a soft blue tone running through it, as well as having a wonderful visual phenomenon called adularescence, which is best described as a glow from below the surface, giving the impression of moonlight floating on water- hence its name.

This incredible collar is set with twenty two pieces of moonstone that graduate in size perfectly. The "smaller" pieces at the end measure around 9.8mm by 10.7mm and graduate elegantly to the largest one in the centre which measures 17mm by 13.6mm. Smallest is put in brackets as even the smallest pieces are much larger than what is found in moonstone necklaces today let alone even other antique moonstone pieces of jewellery.

And then there is the superb quality of the moonstone themselves which are all perfectly matched. Moonstone today is often found without the wonderful adularescence or shimmer that plays throughout the stone and far more often than not, without the gorgeous subtle yet important blueish hue emanating from the stone, and each and every one of these pieces of moonstone display this.

Hand made in 15 carat gold, the collar has a soft curve to it that allows it to sit perfectly on the neckline and measures 39cm in length. Even the individual setting of the moonstones is lovely to admire, as the claw seem to climb up to securely hold each of the stones.

From near or far, this antique collar will always noted for its graceful beauty and elegance and is of exceptional quality and perfect for any collector of fine Victorian jewellery.
