Now this is an incredible example of an antique Georgian era ring that is stunning from all angles and is truly spectacular.
Made in 1821 in 18ct yellow gold, the outside of the ring is all hand carved and shows a wonderful scene of two dogs chasing a fox. This scene alone is captivating and just goes to show how much attention to detail and time was spent hand carving this ring nearly 200 years ago.
With the two black enamel borders on each side, they stand out so nice against the rich yellow colour from the gold, and this ring itself measures 1.1cm wide and is around a size Q 1/2 and due to the carving can not be re-sized.
Inside the band is the hand engraved inscription on the inside which says,"James Grant born 4th May 1804 died 23d August 1821" and while this is a mourning ring, it really shows how much love there was for this young man, and while some people do look at mourning rings as being morbid, this was a very typical way to remember loved ones during this time in a time well before photos or any other device was invented to remember a loved one.
Then there is a truly spectacular piece of craftsmanship at its finest and a true testament to what jewellers could achieve in this era.
On the outside of the ring between one of the hounds and the fox is a very small and very discreet button.
Pushing this button, causes a small hinge inside the band to open up to reveal a secret compartment for a lock of hair.
This is just stunning and is what separates this Georgian era ring from all the others.
The carving on the outside and the secret compartment inside makes this one of the most amazing rings that anyone will see.
