Here is a very beautiful and very unique Irish harp brooch made from bog oak and set with rock crystal and highlighted with 15 carat gold that dates form the Victorian period of the 1870's.
Bog oak is similar in nature to Whitby Jet in that both are the result of fossilization of trees. Whereas Whitby Jet comes from the Araucaria tree around the town of Whitby in the UK, bog oak comes from Ireland and is not a specific species of tree, rather it is a term that designates oak that has been buried in a peat bog. The process for the formation of both bog oak and Whitby Jet takes hundreds to thousands of years to form and is unlike any other material used in jewellery.
It is then befitting that this lovely Irish harp brooch be made from local bog oak. Measuring 44mm by 31mm, the brooch has the strings being made of twisted 15 carat gold as well as the most beautiful and intricate detail along the body of the harp. The detail in the gold work itself is just incredible and then there is a lovely facetted rock crystal which is part of the quartz family, set at the bottom to add even more charm and character to an already incredible piece of jewellery.
This antique brooch is truly like no other, and one that will certainly be such a talking point every time that it is worn.
