An ouroboros is the ancient depiction of a snake or serpent biting its own tail. This goes as far back as ancient Egypt to the book "Enigmatic Book of the Netherworld" which was discovered in the 14th Century BC tomb of King Tutankhamen, and found popularity throughout the ages, particularly in the mid-Victorian time when this brooch was made.
Dating from the 1850's, the brooch was made in 9 carat rose gold and has such a lovely warm colour to it that stands out so well, and will sit so elegantly on any outfit.
Measuring 31.9mm across by 27mm, the oval design is so elegant and when one looks closer and sees the snake design, it is destined to become a conversation starter. Set with an emerald in its eye, even the nineteen seed pearls graduate so elegantly and surround a lock of hair in the centre.

An ouroboros is the ancient depiction of a snake or serpent biting its own tail. This goes as far back as ancient Egypt to the book "Enigmatic Book of the Netherworld" which was discovered in the 14th Century BC tomb of King Tutankhamen.
This talked about the God Ra and Osiris in the underworld, with the ouroboros being depicted twice. Both are manifestations of the deity Mehen, who protects Ra in his underworld journey. The divine figure represents the beginning and end of time.
Ouroboros became a popular motif for design during the mid-19th Century.
