Here is an extremely rare and beautiful antique suffragette necklace that can be worn so many ways. The suffragette movement was pivotal in giving women the right to vote, and the jewellery used to represent the movement was easily characterised by using the colours green, white and violet as can be seen here in this magnificent suffragette necklace.
Made in 15 carat gold at the start of the 1900's, the necklace and detachable brooch/pendant is set with peridot (green), pearls (white) and tourmaline (purple) in a design that is so elegant and typical of jewellery of the late Victorian and early Edwardian eras.
The necklace is set with seventy nine pearls, five peridots and six tourmalines with the pearls designed in a magnificent design reminiscent of a fleur-dis-lis design that adds such an elegant look. Laid out from end to end, this part of the necklace measures 40cm in length and is fitted with a barrel clasp.
And then to make this piece so versatile in how it can be worn, the lower section can be easily removed and then worn as either a brooch along with the necklace, or as a pendant on its own. This lower section is set with twenty six more pearls and a tourmaline and three peridots and measures 3cm across by 4.5mm.
No matter how this piece is worn, it is an incredible necklace that is like no other.

A brief history of the suffragette movement:
Suffragettes were members of women's organisations that started in late 19th century who fought for the right for women to vote in elections. Taking firm root when in 1897 the National Union of Women's Suffrage was founded by Millicent Fawcet who believed in peaceful protest and later in 1903 when Emmeline Pankhurst founded the British Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU), a women-only movement. This later association became more vocal in their protesting, with many women being arrested and going to prison, starting hunger strikes and even burning down churches.
The suffragette campaign was halted when World War I broke out in 1914 and Emmeline Pankhurst instructed the Suffragettes to stop their now often violent campaign and support the government and its war effort. After the war, the Representation of the People Act 1918 gave the vote to women over the age of 30 who met certain property qualifications and then ten years later women gained electoral equality with men when the Representation of the People (Equal Franchise) Act 1928 gave all women the vote at age 21.
