Rare 18ct yellow gold Victorian era antique guard chain

Antique guard chains were often used to hold a ladies pocket watch, and today they can be used for the same or to hold anything else that you desire. This one is a very rare 18ct yellow gold antique guard chain that was made in Vienna and dates from the later part of the 1800's. More often than not, these antique guard or antique muff chains are found in silver or 9ct gold and very rarely 18ct gold. Combine this with the fact that many of these are cut down to make two or three necklaces, and finding one in complete length in 18ct gold is such a find.

If it was opened and laid out from end to it, it would measure an incredible 172cm (5 foot 6 inches). They are of course joined to make one continuous chain with the swivel clip to hold anything on the end. The length easily allows it to be doubled around the neck and still feel so comfortable and not restricting.

This antique guard chain is such an elegant piece , and one that will always feel so special around the neck.

Description
Rare 18ct yellow gold Victorian era antique guard chain

Guard chains were originally designed for a woman to wear around her neck with her fob watch attached. Muff chains followed the same principle and were designed to attach the woolen muff to, so when the lady went inside, she could remove her hands from the muff.
