Vintage 1948 Rolex Bubble Back 6050 in solid gold

One of the most iconic and most collectable of all the vintage watches made by Rolex and indeed out there by any other brand, is the gorgeous Rolex "Bubble Back", and here is one that is up there with the best of them.

Made in solid 18 carat yellow gold in 1948, the dial, hands, indexes as well as the shape of the case, all come together seamlessly to create a watch that looks fabulous on the wrist and will always be admired no matter where or when it is worn.

The case measures 38.5mm by 32mm across plus the Rolex "Super Oyster" crown and is fitted on a very elegant genuine crocodile band that adds to the charm and allure of the watch. Where many watches have increased in size to over 40mm and watches under are looked upon as being "small", this was a gents watch when it was made, and can so easily suit a male or female today and regardless of who wears it, this watch looks so elegant and refined on the wrist.

With the early and rare Super Oyster crown fitted, this was a technological leap forward by Rolex to make a waterproof watch without the screw down crown, making this Bubble Back even more harder to come by.

This Rolex Bubble Back is a wonderful throwback to the style and designs of Rolex that made them what they are today.

What is a Rolex Bubble Back?

The Rolex Bubble Back has become an iconic and important watch in the world of horology.

First released to the world in 1933, the first Rolex Bubble Back had the reference 1858 with the Rolex calibre 520. This was the first self-winding watch in the world. This was fitted in a totally waterproof case, thanks to Rolex's earlier Rolex Oyster design case.

The term "Bubble Back" was actually not given by Rolex. It was the moniker that it was given due to the "new" automatic rotor making the movement thicker than previous models. Because of this, Rolex now had to adjust the thickness of the watch to make room for the automatic rotor system. This now made the back of the watch case more bulbous, giving rise to the nickname "Bubble Back".

What is the Rolex Super Oyster crown?

With the early and rare Super Oyster crown fitted, this was a technological leap forward by Rolex to make a waterproof watch without the screw down crown.

Where can I service my Rolex watch in Sydney?

Sydney Rolex service.

After our store in the beautiful Queen Victoria Building was expanded and renovated in late 2022, we put in not only a full watchmaking and polishing workshop, but a watchmaker who used to work for LVMH as well as Rolex for nearly seven years. This allows us to be able to service your Rolex to Rolex standards. We are also able to service other watch brands such as Omega, Cartier and Patek Philippe to name a few.

How often should I service my Rolex?

We recommend to service your Rolex every five years. If you wear the watch in water, we strongly suggest having your Rolex watch, or any watch for that matter, pressure tested once a year.
