Magnificent antique gold cased earrings from the Victorian era
Here are a fabulous pair of antique gold cased drop earrings that date from the Victorian era and looks spectacular on the ear and will no doubt always be admired every single time that they are worn. Gold cased jewellery is also known as rolled gold and was first invented in Birmingham England in 1785 and was the process of having a a thick sheet of gold that was then soldered to a sheet of brass then rolled out to a thin sheet that was subsequently used for making jewellery. Being very hard wearing and durable allowed it to also be engraved and this process should not be confused with gold plating which although it can be very built up in thick layers, is not as hard wearing as gold filled. These earrings measure 19.4mm across at the lower section by 48.8mm to the top of the shepherd hooks, and the inside sections are not only of a facetted design, but are also able to move independently from the outer section adding to the allure and charm of them. With such an incredible design to them, these earrings will be suitable for any occasion day or night and always be loved and admired. Stock# ES9427 Circa: 1880 $1,925

Antique onyx and diamond earrings made in the 1870’s
Onyx is a natural material from the same family as agate, chalcedony and chrysoprase, and occurs naturally as dense black with a white "streak" running through the stone. Often this white band is either cut away and not used, or the onyx is dyed a complete black, however when the white is used in a carving, it highlights the beauty of the stone resulting in some wonderful designs such as in these antique earrings dating from the 1870's. Made in 18 carat yellow gold and set with a diamond on the top, it really is the onyx and the way it has been cut that is the star of the show. The oval piece of onyx is naturally layered displaying the black top that has a wonderful and elegant dome shape to it, as well as the black "base" of the stone, and then ingeniously, the carver not only left the white in the stone, but carved it into little "pearls" surrounding the top. The amount of painstaking time and care that would have been needed to carve the stones with all the tools and equipment from 150 years ago makes them even more incredibly and is a real testament to the quality of work from this wonderful bygone era. At the top of each earring is a European cut diamond that both come together to total 0.06 carats and are each gypsy set which can be seen as the delightful star pattern around each diamond which was a popular diamond setting technique during the Victorian and Edwardian eras. Measuring 13.8mm wide by 26mm to the top of the diamond set sections at the top, each earring is set on lovely long post fittings with butterfly catches. As beautiful and elegant today as when they were made, there is no doubt that these earrings will always be loved, cherished and admired. Stock# ES9207 Circa: 1870 $Sold

These antique earrings are perfect for anyone who loves Whitby jet or cameos or in this case, conveniently both. The length of these earrings combined with the combination of Whitby jet and the cameo make them a truly sensational pair of earrings that are as beautiful as they are unique. Whitby jet is a fossilized material of a tree called the Araucaria Tree which is also known as the Monkey Puzzle tree. Dense black in colour - which is where the term “Jet black” came from - the best material has always come from the town of Whitby in England, where it was mostly depleted by the end of the 20th century. And then the shell cameo set into each earring not only adds some colour, but makes them truly amazing to admire from near or far. The brown and white is emphasised even more by the black from the jet, and the carving of the jet captures the light so well. Fitted on secure shepherd hooks, these antique earrings are just perfect for any occasion. Stock # ES9139 Circa: 1890 $Sold
