There earrings were made in the 1860's and have such a fantastic and very unique look to them that will make them always be admired and such a wonderful talking point. The earrings are made out of bog oak which is similar to Whitby Jet in that both are the result of fossilization of trees. Whereas Whitby Jet comes from the Araucaria tree primarily around the town of Whitby in the UK, bog oak comes from Ireland and is not a specific species of tree, rather it is a term that designates oak that has been buried in a peat bog. The process for the formation of both bog oak and Whitby Jet takes hundreds to thousands of years to form and is unlike any other material used in jewellery and both have a wonderful dark black colouring as well as a fantastic texture to touch. Each earring measures 44.2mm in length from the bottom to the top of the shepherd hook, by 15.1mm across and have a fabulous pierce work affect which is highlighted by a white pearl set into each one. As unique as they are beautiful, these earrings are a wonderful look at mid-Victorian jewellery that is as fashionable today as when they were made. Stock# ES9571 Circa: 1860 Sold

The sapphires in these earrings are not only magnificent in both size and colour, but are also unheat treated Ceylonese sapphires making them even more special and amazing to admire. For centuries it was known that if a sapphire or ruby was placed into a fire it will improve its colour and clarity, and although the technology in doing this has now changed, people have been heat treating sapphires and rubies ever since for this reason. This treatment is worldwide accepted as a normal treatment and not deceiving in any way and is accepted as a standard treatment for sapphires and rubies as it remains stable and does not damage the stone. However it is much more exciting when the sapphires or rubies have not undergone any treatment and still display such a fantastic colour and transparency such as those that are set into these earrings. For centuries Ceylonese sapphires have been regarded as the best in the world, and these truly exemplify this. Hand made in 18 carat yellow gold and platinum, the two sapphires total an impressive 3.75 carats and display such a magnificent royal blue colour. The colour of these sapphires is absolutely captivating and they have such an intense depth of colour that put these up there with some of the finest Ceylonese sapphires around. Each earring is surrounded by ten European cut diamonds with the twenty diamonds coming together to total an impressive 2.80 carats. Here are a fabulous pair of antique gold cased drop earrings that date from the Victorian era and looks spectacular on the ear and will no doubt always be admired every single time that they are worn. Gold cased jewellery is also known as rolled gold and was first invented in Birmingham England in 1785 and was the process of having a a thick sheet of gold that was then soldered to a sheet of brass then rolled out to a thin sheet that was subsequently used for making jewellery. Being very hard wearing and durable allowed it to also be engraved and this process should not be confused with gold plating which although it can be very built up in thick layers, is not as hard wearing as gold filled. These earrings measure 19.4mm across at the lower section by 48.8mm to the top of the shepherd hooks, and the inside sections are not only of a facetted design, but are also able to move independently from the outer section adding to the allure and charm of them. With such an incredible design to them, these earrings will be suitable for any occasion day or night and always be loved and admired. Stock# ES9427 Circa: 1880 $Sold.
Onyx is a natural material from the same family as agate, chalcedony and chrysoprase, and occurs naturally as dense black with a white “streak” running through the stone. Often this white band is either cut away and not used, or the onyx is dyed a complete black, however when the white is used in a carving, it highlights the beauty of the stone resulting in some wonderful designs such as in these antique drop earrings dating from the Victorian era of the 1880’s. Made in 15 carat gold, each earring is set with three round pieces of naturally banded onyx, with the largest one at the bottom, a medium sized one at the top and a charming small on in the centre set amongst a lovely knot design. Fitted on elegant shepherd hooks, the earrings measure 14.5mm across at the largest lower piece by 35.9mm to the top of the hooks.
