The Rolex Datejust Legacy
The Rolex Datejust is one of the most enduring watches in watchmaking history. Introduced in 1945 to mark the company’s 40-year anniversary, it was the first self-winding wristwatch with a date window which updated automatically at midnight. It was also the first Rolex model to feature the Jubilee bracelet.
In 1954 Rolex introduced the Cyclops magnifier over the date window, and by the late 1950s Rolex refined the model further with the Datejust ref. 1601, a version that ran from 1959 until the late 1970s. Collectors today love this period for the pie-pan dials, fluted bezels and robust Calibre 1565 and 1575 movements.
Rolex Datejust 1601 Production Years
The Rolex Datejust 1601 was introduced in 1959 and produced until 1977 when it was replaced by five-digit references like the 16014. This nearly two-decade run means there are examples from every year between 1959 and 1977.
- Early 1960s (1959-1965): Calibre 1565, pie-pan dials, early casebacks, introduction of the “Rolesor” two-tone Datejust.
- Mid 1960s to early 1970s (1965-1971): Transition to Calibre 1575, improved accuracy.
- 1972 onwards: Hacking seconds, making watches like the 1972 Datejust 1601 especially collectible.
- 1977: Last production year, some stock continued to sell into the early 1980s.
This timeline means you can find a 1963 Rolex Datejust 1601, a 1969 Datejust 1601 or a final run 1977 Rolex Datejust 1601 depending on what you’re looking for.

Vintage Rolex Datejust FAQs
What year was the Rolex Datejust 1601 produced?
The Rolex Datejust ref. 1601 was produced from 1959 until 1977, nearly two decades of design and technical evolution.
How much is a vintage Rolex Datejust worth?
Prices vary depending on condition, originality and year. A well-preserved Rolex Datejust 1601 with original dial and bracelet can command a premium, while more common models remain entry points into Rolex collecting.
What is the difference between the 1601, 1600 and 1603?
The 1601 has a gold fluted bezel. The 1600 has a smooth bezel and the 1603 has an engine-turned bezel often in stainless steel.
What movement does the Rolex 1601 use?
Early models had the Calibre 1565, later the Calibre 1575. In 1972 hacking seconds was added so the second hand would stop when the crown was pulled for more precise time-setting.
Can Kalmar Antiques find a Rolex 1601 for me?
Yes, we specialise in sourcing and servicing vintage Rolex Datejust models. Whether you want a 1963 Datejust, 1972 Datejust 1601 or a last-year 1977 model we can source it.
When were the five digit 16xxx models introduced?
The late 1970’s saw a shift from the 1601 to the five-digit 16xxx models and with it the introduction of the 3035 calibre movement. The high beat movement resulted in the now famous “sweep” of the second hand, an upgraded power reserve to 50 hours, as well as the introduction of the ‘quickset’ Rapid Date Change feature. It also brought in an updated design including a flat dial – replacing the “pie pan” – and an 18k gold version.
Ten years later, Rolex upgraded the Datejust to the 3135 calibre movement and, more notably, saw the evolution from acrylic crystal to the slimmer and hardier synthetic sapphire crystal. (The sapphire crystal was first introduced in the Oysterquartz collection in the 1970’s and the Datejust was one of the few models to offer the option of a quartz movement).
The next major update of the Datejust wouldn’t happen until the 2000s with the arrival of the supersized Datejust II in 2009, famous for the 41mm case, and later the Datejust 41 with the new 3235 calibre movement which boasted a 70-hour power reserve.
