Here is a spectacular piece of jewellery that was made in France around the 1880's and is just magnificent and one of the most stunning pieces of jewellery that you could ever wear.
Made in 18ct rose gold, this antique necklace is also called a guard chain or fob watch chain and was made to hold a pocket watch.
The chain itself measures 148cm (74cm in length when laid down), and hangs so nicely around the neck.
What makes this piece of jewellery so superb is that it is fitted with two glorious fox tail link tassels that are not only made in rose gold but also highlighted with green gold. Green gold was only used for about 20 years during the later part of the 19th century and has such a wonderful soft green colour.
As though this wasn't enough the chain is set with a very charming photo locket that is also made in both rose and green gold and sits between the tassels so elegantly.
The locket measures 1.6cm by 1.1cm and has the same matching pattern as the tassels.
The locket and tassels slide along the chain thanks to the 18ct rose gold slide bar that again uses rose and green gold and is delightfully engraved on the reverse side.
This antique chain was designed to have the tassels and lockets to one side instead of at the bottom and being able to slide along the chain can be moved to suit the wearers choice.
The swivel is a typically high quality French swivel that has a very secure system of being screwed on at the base to lock it on and never inadvertently open.
French jewellers of this period created some truly fabulous pieces of jewellery and this antique chain is one of the finest around and is still in superb condition even well after 130 years.
