This beautiful antique double sided locket was made in the 1860's at the height of what is called the "Romantic period" of the Victorian era, and is so beautiful on each side and has such a wonderful tactile feel to it.
Made in 9 carat gold, one side is set with a turquoise and the other a cluster of turquoise surrounding a ruby. Both sides have an engine turned design that leads to the border which is so beautifully carved and the entire locket is still in exceptional condition which is made all the more amazing when you consider that it was made over 170 years ago.
Measuring 21.7mm across by 32.5mm, inside it still holds an original lock of hair, and while many might consider this mourning jewellery, this is not necessarily the case as hair was often given to loved ones a token of love and with the bright blue turquoise and the absence of black, this all points away from mourning jewellery. While the hair can be taken out and replaced with a photo, it is still a lovely reminder of a beautiful time gone by.
Regardless of which way is worn facing the front, there is little doubt that it will always be loved and admired.
