Here is a very stylish antique enamel Vesta case by Joseph Hayes Taylor that was made in Birmingham 1893 and is so charming with the rower on the front.
Originally designed as a way to keep matches dry, the matches made in the Victorian era to the early 1900's were able to be lit by striking them against a course surface, and that is why the base of the Vesta cases have that ribbed section to draw the match across.
This one was made in sterling silver and measures 47mm across by 57mm and are now often seen attached to a necklace or chain to wear around the neck and they make a wonderful and unique talking point.
With the added charm of the enamel scene on the front, this antique Vesta case will always be such a wonderful talking point.
