In our print and media advertising, we say that you can hold a piece of history in your hand, and every now and again something comes along that makes this term so applicable. Here is a truly wonderful hand painted miniature dating from the late Victorian period of a young baby. However it is a young baby that we can determine not only who she is, but her connection with Australian history.
It is a hand painted portrait of Barbara Sybil Fremantle who was the daughter of Admiral Sir Sydney Fremantle, great nephew of Sir Charles Howe Fremantle.
Sir Charles Fremantle took possession of the west coast of Australia shortly before the arrival of the first European settlers on May 2nd, 1829. The port of Fremantle Western Australia was named in his memory.
It really makes this antique miniature so much more special when all of this is known.
Then there is the frame which was made in 9ct rose gold and surrounded by 56 natural pearls with 4 more on the top bail all of which sits perfectly inside its original box made by the English company Walter Jones.*Please note, we show an image of the company Walter Jones in London, however it is not included with the sale of this miniature, but may be printed out if desired*
On the back of the miniature it is wonderfully hand engraved, “Barbara Sybil Fremantle, 10 months, Xmas 1898 from Auntie Edith†that ties all of the history together.
With the miniature measuring 55mm across by 66.8mm it will sit so well on a wall or of course in its original fitted box and no matter where it is displayed, it will continue to always be a piece of Australian history.
A real treasure.
