This is a wonderful antique Mizpah brooch made from Whitby Jet in the late Victorian time of the 1890’s.
Whitby Jet is such a wonderful material coming from fossilised plant material that when polished such as this piece takes on a wonderful “jet black” appearance and was very popular in the late 1800’s to be used in jewellery.
Here this Whitby jet brooch has both the word Mizpah and its meaning.
