Pietra dura originated during Roman times and is the term given for the inlay technique of using cut and fitted, highly-polished colored stones to create images in solid walls and floors, furniture as well as jewellery, as can be seen here in these very beautiful antique pietra dura earrings that date from the 1870's.
Each earring is set with an oval section of pietra dura that measures 12.9mm across by 16mm and depicts a charming bouquet of flowers. The contrast of the colours of the flowers set against the dense black background really makes them stand out even more.
Set in an 18 carat yellow gold Etruscan styled mount that measures 23.9mm by 19.9mm, these earrings look so beautiful on the ear and combine a beautiful mount together with the amazing pietra dura work of a bygone era.
