Brief history on signet rings.
Signet rings have been used since 3,200 BC, however these were not true signet rings in the sense of later rings that were engraved with a family seal or crest. This form of ring has been around since the 17th century, and were originally for royalty and noble families and was often used to press down into warm wax that was dripped onto paper to show a royal seal, or an envelope to prevent anyone from opening the letter, as once the letter was opened, this would break the seal mark.
Today, signet rings are often engraved with initials or even left plain.
