Antique signet ring with hinged top from the Dewar clan

This is a superb Victorian era antique signet ring from the Dewar clan of Edinburgh and dating from around the 1860’s.
Not only is it a signet ring it goes one further by having a hinged top.
Signet rings are always so unique and so much a part of history for when a letter was sealed with wax and this superb antique signet ring is set with banded agate on the top (with natural banding – the horizontal line is part of the agate and not a crack) and expertly hand carved with the seal of the Dewar clan and the Latin inscription “Quid non pro patria” which translates to “What will a man not do for his country”.
The Dewar clan settled South East of Edinburgh and this ring is truly a part of that history.
The top measures 13.5mm by 11.2mm and the side of the ring has the most subtle and beautiful hand engraving.
Made in 18ct gold, antique signet rings are always amazing but to find one that can be traced back to its clan as well as having the hinged top is simply magnificent.
