This is such an attractive antique silver brooch/locket highlighted with rose and green gold and can so easily be worn during the day and well into the night for any formal occasion and will be such a wonderful conversation starter for so many points.
To begin with the brooch which measures 38mm by 30.2mm, has a beautiful design at each end and the wonderful bird perched on the branch. And making this brooch even more special, the bird, berries and border of the brooch are in rose gold, and the leaves in the much harder to fine green gold.
Rose gold is made by primarily adding copper to the gold when being alloyed resulting in the lovely warm tone to it, and today green gold is made by adding silver to the gold, however the green colour is more a soft green-yellow colour. However during the late Victorian period of the 1890's when this locket was made, cadmium was added resulting in a stronger colour. While never a strong green such as yellow or white gold, the tone of green in antique pieces is more pronounced and used here highlights the leaves in the floral design perfectly.
And then turning the brooch over reveals a section where a photo can be placed making this such a wonderful locket that is then made so personal once a photo is placed inside.
This is the type of jewellery that gets more and more beautiful the closer you get to it and you can really appreciate the time and details that went into making this all those years ago.

Antique silver brooch/locket highlighted with rose and green gold
This antique brooch also doubles as an antique locket. Made in sterling silver, it is highlighted with rose gold and the rare green gold. Green gold was made during the late 1800's by adding cadmium that was toxic for the jewellers when it was being alloyed. Safe to touch and wear now, it highlights "leaves" perfectly in antique jewellery such as this one. Made in the late Victorian era, it is perfect for day or night time wear and will always be admired for its elegance and design.
