Whitby jet is a form of fossilised wood that was found in Whitby in the English county of North Yorkshire and was made popular by Queen Victoria and here is a very attractive and sweet antique compass set into a Whitby Jet case.
Very typical of the late Victorian period, this dates from the 1890's and the compass is still in full working order. With the Whitby Jet case hand carved, it measures 21.7mm across by 31.5mm to the top bail where a chain or necklace can slide through or 26mm to the top of the Whitby Jet.
This sweet little Whitby Jet compass would look so good on a chain around a neck and always be such a wonderful conversation starter.
