Here is a truly exquisite Art Deco agate box with platinum diamond and black onyx hinges that highlights the quality and attention to detail that is the epitome of the Art Deco period of the 1920's.
Carved in agate, the box measures 88mm in length by 63mm wide and 12.8mm tall, and even though the platinum diamond and onyx fittings were made in France and was no doubt where this was all assembled, the box would have more than likely have been carved in the gemstone carving centre of the world, Idar-Oberstein in Germany. For centuries Idar-Oberstein was known as the best place in the world for cutting agate that was sourced both locally as well as from Brazil.
The hinges and clasp on this box bear French hallmarks for being made in platinum, and the clasp is set with fifty seven diamonds and each hinge forty one diamonds.
With each section further highlighted with facetted black onyx, this wonderful black and white combination stands out even more to show the elegant design and shape that is so characteristic of the Art Deco period.
Absolutely exquisite, this is a box for the discerning collector.
