Edwardian untreated sapphire and diamond pendant by Daniel Todd & Son

Here is a magnificent Edwardian untreated sapphire and diamond pendant made by the jewellers Daniel Todd & Son in the early 1900’s.

Sapphires and rubies have been heat treated for centuries to improve their colour and clarity and this is a worldwide accepted practice, however it is estimated that only between 1% and 5% of sapphires are good enough to be set into jewellery without being treated. It should be clarified that a sapphire or ruby that has undergone some form of heat treatment is still a natural gemstone from the ground and is not a synthetic/man made stone and the treatment is completely stable. Lately on the market there is a technique of glass filling or lead filling stones which will improve the colour of a natural gemstone, however this treatment is very unstable and the stone may look worse in a few years.

There is of course nothing wrong with a heat treated sapphire, however there is something so special about owing and wearing an untreated sapphire and this pedant is just magnificent.

Hand made in 18ct yellow gold and platinum, this elegant pendant is set with the magnificent untreated sapphire that has been certified and measures 4.61 carats. Displaying such a fine blue colour and

This sapphire measures 4.61 carats and has such a fine blue colour to it and a wonderful clarity that allows you to see right through the sapphire and truly appreciate its beauty.

In a lovely twist to a traditional cluster of diamonds, there are six larger European cut diamonds, each separated by eighteen rose cut diamonds. And then on the bail for the chain to go through, there are an additional five more rose cut diamonds. The European cut diamonds total 0.60 carats and the rose cut diamonds total 0.14 carats.

The pendant itself measures14mm across by 19mm or 27.2mm to the top of the bail and also comes presented in its original box. Made by the jewellery company Daniel Todd & Son, this company started in Glasgow in 1786 and with its box adds that extra special character to an already incredible pendant.

This sapphire and diamond pendant presents itself so well and has an air of grace and elegance so typical of the romantic Edwardian era when this was made.
