Here is an exceptional quality and very rare non heat treated natural ruby and diamond ring made in France in the 1950's that is spectacular.
To begin with, it is very difficult to find natural rubies that are over 2 carats in size. This one measures 2.86 carats, and is not only large in size, but has a fantastic strong red colour, combined with excellent transparency allowing you to see right through the ruby.
And then there is the incredible fact that this ruby is unheated. Centuries ago, people discovered that if you put a sapphire or ruby into a fire it will improve its colour and clarity, and people have been heat treating sapphires and rubies for this exact reason. This treatment is worldwide accepted as a normal treatment and not deceiving in any way and is accepted as a standard treatment for sapphires and rubies. It should be clarified that a sapphire or ruby that has undergone some form of heat treatment is still a natural gemstone from the ground and is not a synthetic/man made stone and the treatment is completely stable. Lately on the market there is a technique of glass filling or lead filling stones which will improve the colour of a natural gemstone, however this treatment is very unstable and the stone may look worse in a few years.
However in this ring it is set with a ruby that besides being facetted, is as it was when it came out of the ground and has not undergone any treatment whatsoever. Combined with the fact that it is such a superb colour and clarity, and this all comes together to make this a very important ring indeed.
Surrounding the ruby are twelve round brilliant cut diamonds that total 0.88 carats and are G in colour and VS in clarity. With a magnificent sparkle to add to the character of this ring, the ring measures 19.3mm across by 21.8mm.
Designed with wonderful angular shoulders, this is both a spectacular and very rare ruby and diamond ring for any connoisseur of fine jewellery.
