Ulysse Nardin was a famous watchmaker in Switzerland in the 1800’s who made a name as producing extremely high quality and reliable watch chronometers for both international navies and shipping companies, and here is a fabulous vintage Ulysse Nardin deck chronometer pocket watch in a solid sterling silver case.
Offshore the correct time is fundamental in determining the Longitude, as one second difference in the equator represents an error of 30 meters.
Deck chronometers are big and very precise pocket watches, synchronised with the Marine Chronometer were used by the ship’s Captain to know the exact time on Deck in order to locate and also brought with him when landed to make sure no one changed the official time of the ship while in his absence.
Made in 1950, the case measures 63mm across by 89.5mm from the bottom to the top of the bow, and has an incredible heft that feels magnificent in to hold in the palm of your hand. With a truly amazing tactile feel to it, this is certainly a conversation starter to all who see and admire it.
With the clean white dial displaying traditional black Roman numerals and the sub-seconds at the bottom, just under the 12 o’clock position is a power reserve indicator.
The movement is a hand wound pin set style that allows for the time to be set by pressing in the button near the 11 o’clock position and turning the hands to set the time. Releasing this button, will then allow it to be wound.
Fully serviced and in wonderful condition, this Ulysse Nardin pocket watch is so special and is certainly something that will always be appreciated and admired.
