Here are a piece of history that you can wear and enjoy and show off with pride, an amazing pair of Whitby jet and ammonite fossil earrings dating from the Victorian period of the 1880's.
Ammonites were a sea creature related to the modern day octopus, squid and nautilus which it resembles closely, and living in the Jurassic and Cretaceous times over 240 to 60 million years ago, and are often found on the Yorkshire coast and formed as fossils the same time as the Whitby Jet.
Whitby Jet is also a fossilized material, however in this case it is the remains of a tree called the Araucaria Tree also known as the Monkey Puzzle tree and is dense black, hence the term "Jet black", and sometimes when the two combine, you are able to polish and carve the Whitby Jet with the ammonite fossils in situ as can be seen here in these Victorian era earrings.
With a gorgeous design that looks as modern today as when they were carved over 120 years ago, they have such a contemporary look and style to them.
From the bottom to the top of the shepherd hook, this distance measures an elegant 6.8cm in length or 5.3cm from the bottom piece of Whitby jet to the top one by 2cm wide for the lower piece.
These antique Whitby Jet and ammonite earrings really are just so incredible and such an amazing talking point and are as unique as the fossils themselves.
