Here is a magnificent antique WMF claret jug that is the epitome of the Art Nouveau period of the late 1890’s when this was made.
WMF is a German company and stands for Württemberg Metallwarenfabrik and became world leaders in producing an extremely durable and hard wearing alloy similar to pewter, typically composed of 92% tin, 6% antimony & 2% copper and then plated in a hard coating of silver, or an oxidized coating, and among the numerous pieces produced, they always embraced the wonderful flowing designs typical of Art Nouveau.
Standing 40.5cm tall and with the base measuring 17.2cm in diameter, the green glass looks magnificent under the light and the base with the face of a woman in a flowing design so typical of the Art Nouveau period, combined with the top, stopper and simply gorgeous handle, all come to make something that is not only practical to use today, but is a work of art in its own right.
Destined to make any room in the house look even more special, this antique WMF claret jug will certainly be admired by all who see it.
