Antique ring set with mine cut diamonds in 18 carat gold
This antique diamond ring was hand made in 18 carat yellow gold and is set with three large antique mine cut diamonds and ten smaller antique mine cut diamonds. The mine cut diamond was first cut at the start of the 18th century, and was a great leap forward with the “invention†of this new fifty eight facetted diamond. At the time, these were the closest resemblance to today’s brilliant cut, and are referred to as old mine cuts, or old miners. These were cut often squarish or cushion shaped, with quite a steep angle on the crown and pavilion, to maximise weight retention. While weight was kept to a maximum, they often lacked a lot of internal fire and “brillianceâ€. As well as these features, the “old miners†often had quite a large culet or “colletâ€, the horizontal base formed by the blunting of a point when the stone is cut as a brilliant. Today modern versions of the antique mine cut diamond as well as the European cut diamond and rose cut diamond are all being cut in the diamond cutting houses in Europe and India, showing just how popular these antique diamond cuts are.
