Antique ruby and diamond bangle by Denis Brothers
What an incredible bangle made all the more amazing by the fact that it was made over 140 years ago, is still in brilliant condition, and was made by one of Australia’s early jewellers.
Dating from the 1880’s, this magnificent bangle was made in 15 carat gold and has such a lovely warm colour to the gold. Made by Denis Brothers who were in business from 1853 until 1910, the quality of this bangle is just incredible.
In the centre sits a lovely mine cut diamond that are also affectionately known as cushion cut diamonds, and is highlighted with four rose cut diamonds around it. With another mine cut diamond at each end, the diamonds come together to total 1.22 carats, and all the diamonds have such a wonderful sparkle to them that are complimented by those fabulous four rubies.
These rubies total 1.40 carats, and not only do they display such a fine red, but are also unheat treated. Today it is very common to heat treat rubies and sapphires to improve their colour and clarity, and while there is absolutely nothing at all wrong with this treatment, and is a worldwide accepted treatment and not deceiving in any way, there is something quite special having rubies such as these that have not undergone any treatment at all. Their fine red colour truly adds to this bangle so much as does the elegant scroll work details, engraving and of course the triple bar design.
Being hinged also allows the bangle to sit lovely and close to the wrist, and is fitted with a safety chain for added security.
And then to make this piece even more wonderful, this exact bangle is featured on page 74 of the book, “Australian Jewellers: Gold & Silversmiths, Makers & Marks, by Kenneth Cavill, Graham Cocks, and Jack Grace”.
This truly is a magnificent bangle from every aspect, and one that will always be loved and adored each and every time that it is worn.
