Antique Whitby jet brooch from the 1880s

Whitby Jet is a fossilized material of a tree called the Araucaria Tree also known as the Monkey Puzzle tree and is dense black in colour, which is where the term “Jet black” came from.

The best material has always come from the town of Whitby in England, and was most popular in the late Victorian era when Queen Victoria herself wore only black after the death of Prince Albert. Due to it being found on the relatively short North Yorkshire coastline, and most commercial quality has already been long-since mined out, it has become increasingly popular and sought after in recent years, and here is a gorgeous antique Whitby jet brooch that looks as incredible today as when it was made well over a century ago.

Dating from the 1880’s and set in the most delightful and charming mount that was made in 9 carat gold, even the mount itself has the most charming design with the finest hand engraved detail. With a complete border of fine claws securing the Whitby jet in place, it is this piece of Whitby jet that is the true star in this brooch.

With the most incredible shape, it was so incredibly hand carved that gives this brooch such an amazing sculptured look and feel to it.

This combined with it measuring an impressive 3.5cm across by 3.6cm in size, this is a truly incredible brooch that is as unique as it is spectacular.
